Well, I think that in today's world of micro-Taxis (I
have actually seen Toyota Avalons and Dodge Stratuss
(Stratuses? Stratii?) used for taxi cabs! Tiny and
cramped!), there would definitely be a market for
them. One just has to witness the ongoing success of
purpose-built taxicabs here in the UK to realize that
these vehicles are needed/wanted. The question
becomes whether or not they would be able to sell
enough of them to make it profitable. Thats a little
bit more iffy. My understanding is that it is a lot
more expensive to build a car that will meet minimum
safety/economy standards today than it was 25 years
ago. And even then, the profit margin on Checkers
seems to have been fairly slim (otherwise they
wouldn't have ceased production in the first place,
no?)..
So, to sum up, I think it would be WONDERFUL if
Checker started making cars again... BUT... I'm not
going to be holding my breath. It may be nice to
think about, but It isn't going to happen.
