There is a body wiring harness which is for all the lights, dash, etc. This is usually considered to be two physical parts, the dash / front fenders / fuse box and the interior / trunk / rear lighting / gas sender section. There is a separate engine wiring harness which is distributor, coil, sending units, emissions controls, carb controls (if 81/82), etc. And there was a auxiliary wiring harness to support the taxi dome light, meter, commercial radio, etc. A number of companies, including Painless (who are sometimes more expensive), make generic wiring harnesses for body applications and semi custom wiring harnesses for specific engine combinations. The Painless web site has great documentation on their offerings but the cheapest place (in my experience) to buy them is Summit Racing. Joe Pollard has told me he has wiring harnesses made locally by a company. I don't know the details but they are probably somewhat Checker specific ... you would have to ask Joe. One key point ... some of the factory dash gauges are 6 volt on the old 5 gauge design which should be in your 71 ... now might be a good time to buy and install one of Ben Perlin's solid state modules in place of the points reduction unit built inside of the temp gauge. There were details about the 6 volt dash in the newsletter a few issues back. John W Thomas McIntyre wrote: > Just had my third wiring harness fire in 6 years. Time for a new > harness. He also said that it's got the Corvette LT-1 engine in it, as there was a shortage of 350's that year. Perhaps someone in the know can weigh in on if this is true or not. There is some pretty serious body rot. The rear curved glass and rear door glass are whole and clear. If anyone wants any more information on this car, let me know I can hook you up with the owner.
