One A12-E Checker was built with the small rear doors. As anyone who owns a
A11-e or a A12-e the rear doors sag due to the excess weight. We received many
complaints on this problem. Sometime,in the 70's I asked David Markin if I
could build a new A12-E with regular rear doors. He asked me show him a
drawing of one, which I did. After permission I, with help of a couple key
employees, welded a second center pillar into a E body. We filled in the nine inches
between the two pillars with a front door skin on the lower & a flat panel
above the belt line , which was covered with vinyl roof material. The inside
panel was covered with headliner material. This body was ran down the
production line to completion. It looked great and the doors did not sag. This was
the only Checker built with this configuration. The Engineering Dept. put the
kabosh on the idea. I have no idea what ever happened to this one of a kind.
